All the Pros and Cons About Carpeting; Everything You Should Know !

Wanting carpet for the majority of the house or even just the bedroom is a very popular flooring choice in modern UK houses. This is because these flooring options aren't available with other flooring options. They provide great insulation - a requirement for when the British weather is at its coldest and you are wanting a warmer house without extra cost towards the heating. However, regular maintenance is needed for the carpet to have a good appearance and remain clean. This is more required in places of high foot traffic, such as hallways.

Why You Should Choose Carpets

It Can Reduce Noise

Echoes happen due to sound waves reflecting off of reflective soundwaves, which usually are walls, solid furniture and smooth floors. Therefore, the more reflective surfaces, the louder the echoes. This is not ideal, especially if you are already living in a loud and rowdy house. By using carpet, you are decreasing the number of reflective surfaces, the number of sound waves bouncing off the surfaces, and therefore reducing the number of echoes occurring in your living space as they will be absorbed into the carpet. This can be beneficial for when you are trying to muffle noises, such as footsteps, music, voices, etc. It can be just the thing that gives you peace of mind.

It Can Be Very Affordable

Carpet is available in many choices - from the color, style, weave, pattern, etc. So, like every other flooring option, it is available at a range of prices. Depending on how much is required and the carpet itself, in terms of the material used and the construction, you will be able to find a carpet that is both up to your standards and affordable. This is perfect for those wanting to find their perfect carpet but without wanting to break the bank.

There is a Large Choice to Choose From

With how popular carpeting has become in the last few decades, is it not without reason? Carpeting is available in every color under the sun and comes in almost every design and pattern there is. You can easily find what you are looking for - if it’s something to complement your furniture, walls, and accessories, or something to reflect your personality, style or give off a certain vibe and aesthetic. The possibilities are endless and available to you how you want it. If you want a focal piece, something to be eye-catching and spectacular, you can go for a bold and eccentric rug that stands out. On the flip side, if your decor is bold and eccentric, you can use simple and plain colours, like a grey carpet, to tie everything together and act as a neutral image.

It’s Softer

Saved the best for last. No doubt, carpet is more comfortable than smooth, level flooring. The relaxing, soft, and padded feel of the carpet under your feet, as you come home from a long day, is a luxury you won’t receive from other floorings. The carpet yarns are what separates carpet from the other flooring choices as it traps warm air underneath its fibers and keeps the carpet warm. It is perfect for mornings where hardwood and laminate floors are usually cold and unbearable.

Why you might want to reconsider

It Shows Areas Wear and Tears

It is commonly known that carpet will display evidence of usage, one way or another. A very common way is through wear and tear and discoloration. A carpet can look untouched if it actually remains untouched - this is impractical, especially in areas of high traffic, like hallways. Carpets with low yarn count and large pile heights are more likely to become matted down quicker than rugs with shorter pile heights and high yarn counts. If you are wanting the perfect carpet for a hallway, condensed, short-pile carpets are best while carpets for bedrooms- a shaggy carpet might be the better option. As mentioned before, discoloration is an issue with carpet usage. It is inevitable that a carpet’s color will start to fade and discolor. However, this can be reduced. Patterned carpets, like striped carpets, or darker shades, like dark grey carpets, are better at counseling and camouflaging the usage.

Can Require a Lot of Attention And Maintenance

Through usage, especially with heavy usage, yarn fibers can make their way out of the carpet. This is particularly common with yarn threads that have shorter fibers woven into them.  They can also collect floating dust particles and trap them within the yarn threads - which is particularly common in shaggy carpets. This is why vacuuming regularly is a requirement for carpet, especially in households where asthma and other problems are a concern. Therefore, the bare minimum of carpet care is vacuuming regularly. However, not everything can be solved by vacuuming regularly and there are situations that require a little more. For certain stains, such as red wine or coffee spills, the carpet may have to be professionally cleaned to ensure that it is removed without damaging the carpet and worsening the stain by rubbing it deeper into the carpet. This can be costly and isn’t recommended for frequent cleaning but is for a seasonal deep clean. For stains that you can manage yourself, you would have to spot clean them to ensure that it doesn’t spread to the area around them. Remember to soak in as much of the spill you can before treating it - it prevents the spill from spreading and making the stain bigger.

It Can Only Be Used In Certain Areas

Carpets are great, very great, but not great in certain areas - the wet kind. If you are wanting to place the carpet in a bedroom or the hallway, that is fine, because those are dry places. Bathrooms and kitchens are not - they are inevitably and constantly wet and are a definite splash zone. The constant exposure would prematurely ruin the carpet and make it unappealing to have around. For these areas, it is better to have something that is water-resistant and can be cleaned without worry – like vinyl or luxury vinyl tiles. If you are wanting to cover your whole house in carpet, it would be the best option to choose a different flooring option for bathrooms and kitchens.
