What You Should Know When Selecting Carpets

Carpeting has and still is a popular choice for flooring in modern homes. Its soft, fluffy, warm – which separates it from hard and smooth surfaces. It’s the perfect flooring for wanting a warmer house and cozy feels. However, choosing a carpet can be very difficult and a nightmare, especially when there are so many choices to choose from. It’s very foolish to think that carpet doesn’t have different forms and types and each one is suited to different aspects. Understanding the different types of carpet available and knowing what you want for your living space is a better way to purchase carpet than going in blindly. This way you know what is out there and what will benefit you best. It may be the case that it benefits your budget more or you have other factors weighing in that you would rather have met with your carpet choice. Maybe you know nothing about carpet at all, and this blog just may be the very thing that sways your opinion from other smooth surface floorings.

Obviously, one factor won’t be the only thing weighing in – you want to have the ideal carpet that is affordable, comfortable, good quality, and will be perfect around kids and pets if that’s a requirement. Certain areas of the house will receive more traffic than others as well and this can very much factor in deciding which carpet as it directly affects the carpet’s longevity. Patterned carpets are the best at hiding traffic damage while white shaggy isn’t.

Construction and Manufacture

Woven– the traditional way of making carpet and has existed for over 400 years. These were originally hand-made, and still can be, however, they are now mass-produced on a loom and can be made to larger sizes, rather than smaller decorative pieces. This is because woven carpets are made by weaving the yarn all the way through the backing, resulting in a carpet with a firmer and dense feel. These are high-quality, durable, and thick carpets that can withstand heavy foot traffic.

Tufted– this is one of the most prominent types of carpet and is popular in modern and contemporary homes. This is more manufactured on a large-scale industrial loom or using a hand-tufting gun; creating beautiful shaggy carpets. Tufting is where yarn is shot through the back and glued down on the tufted side to the backing. On the other side, the yarn that comes out as a loop is sheared to a certain length resulting in the pile height of the carpet. Depending on the yarn density and the pile height, the longevity and durability of the yarn can be affected.

Loop Pile– Exactly the same product as tufted carpets, however, the loops aren’t trimmed or sheared down. Rather they are left as tufted. This creates a different texture and can also be affected by the pile height and the yarn density.

Materials

Wool–is a very luxurious fiber and when used in rugs and carpets, it is very resistant to foot traffic and can maintain its form. It is very durable and would last a lot of years while maintaining its soft appearance. The yarn is constructed by twisting the fibers into long pieces of yarn. The smaller fibers can shed a lot through usage and come out of the carpet. But the fibers can be pulled out to maintain a smooth look and they don’t shed for long, only until the shorter fibers are all free from the yarn.

Jute and sisal- Jute can be produced by soaking jute stems in water and pulling the softened jute fibers out. On the other hand, Sisal is a long and rugged fiber; obtained from the leaves of the agave plant. These fibers are then spun into threads, providing an environmentally friendly, luxurious thread that is ideal for living rooms and bedroom carpets. These fibers are strong, durable, and can handle heavy usage and traffic, making them perfect for hallways.

Nylon- strong, stretchy fibers. Nylon is used in carpets as the fibers are tough and durable and because it is a cheaper alternative to wool. Nylon maintains its appearance with heavy traffic and is extremely durable hence why it is used in various applications. It can hold its color against cleaning and sunlight exposure; which is ideal for high usage areas. It is fade and heat resistant meaning that it will last a long time under different circumstances and maintain its integrity.

Polypropylene - Polypropylene is less expensive than nylon and polyester but has decreased durability as well. Like polyesters, rugs made from polypropylene won’t maintain their integrity and form in high usage areas; it is better for areas that are more for decoration and less traffic. It does, however, have a good fade and heat resistance so it will be able to retain its’ color and not fade with cleaning and exposure to sunlight.

Carpet Colour

Carpet color is an obvious factor – for both the appearance and the longevity of the carpet. The first choice is always to match the carpet with the current aesthetics – to either complement the walls and furniture or be the centerpiece; the focal point. But you can also choose the carpet based on specific needs, like children, a white carpet is a perfect choice for aesthetics but horrible for small kids and pets. Choosing darker shades can be very beneficial when you are not wanting to constantly clean the carpet or replace it when the time comes. It conceals and hides stains and dirt much better than lighter shade carpets and can delay the need for constant cleaning. Absolutely perfect for when you don’t have enough time.

Where to lay the carpet

The last place you would want to place carpet is wet areas. This includes kitchens and bathrooms as these places are constantly in the splash zone and have a higher chance of bringing down the carpet’s longevity. If placed in bathrooms or kitchens, there is a higher chance that the carpet will have to be replaced prematurely and long before you would if the carpet were placed in a drier area. Carpet is best recommended for dry areas anywhere else in the living space – living rooms, bedrooms, hallways. This is where the carpet can thrive and create a warm living space in comfort.
